Product description

Extra Soft Shore A 3–6 polyaddition silicone for podiatry.

An elastomer based on a special silicone polymer developed for the manufacture of highly comfortable, flexible and durable foot orthoses.

Thanks to its extra-soft formulation, high plasticity and excellent mechanical properties, this polyaddition podiatric silicone allows protective orthoses to be moulded with ease.

Function: Extra Soft Silicone is particularly suitable for the manufacture of soft digital orthoses designed to protect areas subject to friction and overloading. Ideal for creating separators, spacers, interdigital protectors and devices to reduce friction and localised pressure, ensuring maximum comfort even for the most sensitive patients.

Curing: curing takes place at room temperature through a rapid polymerisation reaction that leads to the formation of the final polymer. This process guarantees linear shrinkage close to zero, ensuring dimensional stability, precision during processing and the long-term durability of the orthosis.

Linear shrinkage: linear shrinkage refers to the dimensional change in the silicone following catalysis. In Extra Soft silicone, this is approximately 0.1 per cent, an extremely low value which allows the orthosis to retain the shape modelled by the practitioner almost unchanged. This ensures greater precision, dimensional stability and a better fit to the patient’s foot.

Pot life: the time available for moulding the orthosis is one of the most important aspects when working with silicone. During this time, the material retains the correct consistency for processing after the two components have been mixed. In Extra Soft Polyaddition Silicone, the pot life is approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds. This means that once mixed, the practitioner has sufficient time to blend the product, mould the orthosis and position it correctly on the patient.

Catalysis: after mixing, the silicone begins the catalysis process, increasing in consistency until it sets completely in less than 5 minutes. During this phase, the polymerisation reaction continues until the polymer is fully formed, which is responsible for the orthosis’s elastic properties and final stability.

This balance between working time and curing speed enables the creation of precise and comfortable orthoses whilst optimising operating times in the podiatry practice.

Mixing: mixing in a 1:1 ratio ensures the correct balance between the system’s reactive components. Precise dosing promotes a complete polymerisation reaction, enabling the formation of a stable and homogeneous elastomeric structure. Alterations to the mixing proportions could affect the catalysis times and the final mechanical properties of the material, compromising the performance of the resulting orthosis.

How to use

How do you use Extra Soft polyaddition podiatric silicone?

Hints

To preserve the silicone’s performance, it is important to always work in a clean environment and avoid cross-contamination between the two components.

Certain substances may inhibit the polymerisation reaction, compromising the material’s proper curing. Always use clean, dry tools, gloves and spoons. Do not use with latex, talcum-powdered gloves, oils or solvents, as these may alter the curing process. Store the product at a temperature between 5°C and 27°C.

Frequently asked questions
Can you add more hardener to speed up the curing process?
Ensure the 1:1 ratio is maintained: altering it may compromise the catalytic process and the final properties of the orthosis.
Why isn’t the silicone curing properly?
Check the dosage, the uniformity of the mixture and for any contamination with latex, talcum powder, oils or solvents.
Can the same spoon be used for both ingredients?
Use separate measuring containers to prevent cross-contamination between the base and the activator.
Is the working time the same as the setting time?
No. The first refers to the time available for moulding; the second concerns the hardening of the material.
Why might the silicone fail to cure properly even though the components have been mixed?
The presence of contaminants can inhibit the polymerisation reaction and impair catalysis. Work in a clean area, using clean, dry instruments, gloves and spoons, and avoid contact with latex, talcum powder, oils and solvents.
At what temperature should podiatric silicone be stored?
Store the product at a temperature between 5 °C and 27 °C, ensuring it remains within the specified range to maintain its performance.
