Chlorhexidine is a substance with disinfectant properties due to its chemical structure. It consists of a positively charged compound (cationic) and groups that facilitate absorption into fats (lipophilic). This positive charge allows it to bind to the cell membrane, which has a negative charge.

Depending on the concentration, chlorhexidine acts in two ways:

• At low concentrations, it damages the cell membrane, causing internal materials to leak out and blocking the functioning of enzymes.
• At higher concentrations, it causes the substances inside the cell to coagulate, without, however, causing the contents to leak out.

Ethyl alcohol is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, as it acts through various toxic mechanisms. Its main disinfectant effect stems from its ability to coagulate and denature (alter) proteins. This action affects the cell membrane and internal proteins, impairing the cell’s function. When the membrane is damaged, the cell ruptures and releases its contents, leading to its destruction.
